Apple trees scientific name

The scientific name for the apple tree is "Malus domestica"

Apples have been cultivated for thousands of years and there are now said to be more than 7,500 varieties grown around the world.

More than 20% of all the apples grown each year are pressed and processed into apple juice and cider.

The most grown variety is the golden delicious (which is neither golden nor delicious when compared to many other varieties!). It is widespread because big supermarkets like to sell it because it lasts a long time and is usually free from surface blemishes.

The best flavoured apple in the world is... a matter of personal opinion. With 7500 varieties out there I suggest you start tasting.
